What is the line of departure?

The line of departure, or LOD, is the threshold crossed as Marines enter the area of operation. As Marines step outside the wire, they cross the line of departure. In large movements and prolonged operations the LOD can be an additional ‘stepping off point’ during the course of the operation.

The LOD must be made clear to all Marines the will be patrolling.
