Why do Marines blouse their trousers?

Marines blouse their trousers to prevent animals and natural materials from entering their trousers while operating in austere environments. Marines of yesteryear use to were gators over their ankles. It was an issued piece of gear.

The tradition lives on in today’s Marine Corps where Marines still blouse their boots between the 2nd and 3rd eyelet.
